Careers Day at St Edward’s CofE Academy

Our team recently hosted a careers day at a local school near our Waterloo & Queen Street project in Havering. Rollalong is providing temporary modular homes there to help local families.

The event let students explore different careers in modular construction and the construction sector as a whole. They also learned how our modular building projects like the one near their school come together.

The day began with an introduction to the local development and the temporary homes being built. This gave them useful background on what’s happening nearby and how modular construction can quickly create quality homes.

Staff from Rollalong, Wates, and D4S joined in for the whole day, leading interactive sessions to show what different jobs involve.

In the morning, students took part in a fun “Guess the Career” game. They asked yes-or-no questions to match team members with their jobs, which encouraged curiosity and problem-solving. The activity got everyone talking and helped students learn about different paths into construction, design, manufacturing, and other fields, while meeting professionals face-to-face.

The day also featured career workshops where students tried out different roles. In the structural engineering workshop, teams built paper structures to learn about engineering and teamwork. In the marketing workshop, students created a mock social media post to see how projects are shared with the public. In the Design Workshop, students drew home plans and learned about the basics of design and spatial planning.

These sessions showed that building homes takes more than just construction. It involves designers, engineers, marketers, sales teams, procurement, estimators, and many others working together.

18 Temporary Homes in Havering

Take a closer look at our temporary modular solution being installed on Waterloo and Queens Street in Havering.

The demand for specialist education is rising sharply, with more than 1.7 million pupils in England now identified as having special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), almost 94,000 more than last year. Despite this increase, the Department for Education reports a shortfall of special school places, with fewer than one in ten mainstream schools hosting a SEND unit. To tackle this, the Government has pledged £740 million to deliver thousands of new places, but the need for faster, more flexible solutions is clear.

Drawing on our extensive experience delivering SEND facilities across the UK, Rollalong is now developing a new modular SEND range. We will build this range on the same platform as our temporary housing, which we have demonstrated can be installed in just 2 hours.  The range will be a pre-designed layout that can be configured into various classroom arrangements, offering flexibility to adapt to each setting’s specific needs.

The classroom will be delivered and installed on site on the same day, minimising disruption to pupils and staff. If your needs change, we can swap out the building for a more suitable layout. To ensure it fully reflects the requirements of pupils, staff, and families, we are seeking a school to host a demonstration building for six months, free of charge, which will help us refine the user experience as part of its early development.

Towards the end of last year we handed over a suite of new modular facilities at Beaucroft Foundation School in Wimborne on schedule.

At the start of the summer break we demolished an old double classroom at the school for Dorset Council in order to replace it with a larger double classroom.

In fact, we’ve provided two new buildings on a full turnkey basis: a six-bay double classroom with quiet rooms, lobby and WCs, and changing rooms with WCs and showers for the school swimming pool.

“This was a fantastic effort from everyone involved,” said our Managing Director Steve Chivers, while Projects Director Iain Steele added: “Brilliant work – well done to all involved as it’s a team effort that make these jobs go so well. That’s three buildings handed over in one week as planned.”

In fact, we’re providing two new buildings on a full turnkey basis: a six-bay double classroom with quiet rooms, lobby and WCs, and changing rooms with WCs and showers for the school swimming pool.

The modules have now been installed on site and the whole project will be complete by October half-term.

Last week we delivered a new building to a school in Dorset that had an urgent need for additional classroom space.

To solve a problem for Mountjoy School in Beaminster we provided a previously used building that we had in stock: a six-bay double classroom with WCs, newly refurbished kitchens, M&E package, and suspended ceilings and flooring.

Access to the school site was very challenging but thanks to a team effort, and working closely with Dorset Council and local residents, we completed the installation in one day and ahead of schedule.

The council’s traffic management team set up parking restrictions at short notice and local residents were asked not to park on nearby Fleet Street to allow our vehicles to access the site.

John Butcher, Delivery Manager at Dorset Council, commented: “I think we proved a point that a bit of local knowledge, plenty of public liaison, rolling your sleeves up and being prepared to do some leg work along with working together will always result in a successful outcome!”

Offsite modular construction produces fast results – especially when two companies in the same group work together! 

Dorset Council, an existing client of ours, came to us to help solve an urgent problem by providing additional teaching spaces at extremely short notice at Beaucroft Foundation School in Wimborne.  

Qdos Event Hire is one of our sister companies, part of the Newship Group, and we knew that they had a modular building solution that was perfect for the job – so the kit was sourced and the team dispatched.  

The school now has three new individual 20’ x 32’ open plan spaces, each made up of a four-bay CTX unit. The entire project from order to handover was completed within seven days, including the co-ordination of a team of electricians, who tested and installed emergency and external lighting once onsite, and cleaners. 

The head teacher and all the staff are really pleased with the temporary buildings and very impressed by our quick turnaround. 

The project was a great example of how companies within the Newship Group pull together with a sense of camaraderie to really deliver fast and effective solutions for our customers! 

Sam Evers, Senior Delivery Manager for Assets and Property at Dorset Council, said: “I went to the site yesterday and I just have to say a huge thank you! It is amazing how quickly you have turned this round for the school.  

“They look good and they were filling up with equipment very quickly. The kids will be very happy with them until their college is finished.”

We’re pleased to have completed a modular extension at Lyde Green Primary School in Bristol. 

The project was completed in a challenging timeframe during the school summer holiday period and provides two additional classrooms as well as an entrance lobby, toilets, two storerooms and a plant room. 

We manufactured five modules in total for the new building, which features an air-source heat pump and pressure-treated timber external cladding.

Young dancers hoping to emulate their favourite stars from Strictly Come Dancing can now practise their dance moves in a new purpose-built dance studio.

We were delighted to hand over the studio to Wellington Community Primary School in Aldershot last week.

The dance studio, which was manufactured offsite at our factory in Dorset, has a sprung floor and a mirrored wall. The building also contains two stand-alone rooms to be used for one-to-one lessons with pupils.

Good news to start the week! We’re delighted to have successfully handed over a new science room facility at Harrow Way Community School in Andover a week ahead of schedule.

The new modular chemistry classroom features gas connections fitted throughout the room and was constructed at our factory in Dorset before being installed on site at the school.
