This modular installation demonstrates just how quick and flexible our approach to temporary housing can be. This home will be open to the public by appointment from 14 August until 7 September. This installation is more than a display; it is a solution, a housing solution to tackle the current housing crisis and provide quality temporary modular homes for thousands of families. The GLA (Greater London Authority) is exploring opportunities to use modular housing on vacant brownfield land it owns, making the most of these sites before full redevelopment. By taking a modular unit to multiple locations, the initiative aims to highlight how this innovative approach can help address the temporary accommodation crisis. Our temporary modular housing unit was installed on-site outside City Hall in less than two hours from delivery through to a completed home. Each module was prefabricated offsite as a manufactured engineered product, then assembled on-site with remarkable efficiency. By integrating offsite manufacturing with streamlined on-site assembly, Rollalong significantly reduces construction timelines, delivering critical housing solutions exactly when communities need them. An advantage of modular housing lies in its flexibility. For this part of the project, RCKa led a thoughtful revamp that highlights the adaptability of these homes to suit all types of needs. The homes can be ‘dressed’ in a range of solutions from brick, render and a range of cladding to meet the local need. We applied a natural colour palette and upgraded cladding, creating a refreshed, modern aesthetic with improved visual appeal. A welcoming porch to emulate the external stair/living space solution was added to enhance both the functional entryway and the overall curbside presence. The Problem

Homelessness in the UK has reached the breaking point. Councils spend £2.1 billion annually to house record numbers of families in hotels and B&Bs, and these accommodations often have families living in inadequate conditions. Meeting demand will require 90,000 new social rent homes every year for the next decade, yet from 2022 to 2023, only 9,500 were delivered. This mismatch has pushed boroughs toward financial strain and plunged families deeper into crisis.
