Rollalong Reveals Modular Designs for Housing

24th September 2019 Rollalong has unveiled a range of new homes for affordable housing provider Magna Housing during an open day on Thursday 29th August.  As well as a tour of The Bramble, a three-bed house, guests at the open day had a tour of the manufacturing facility to gain a more detailed understanding of how modular houses are constructed.   Paul Read, Head of Development and Sales at Magna, said: “We have a five–year development strategy to deliver a programme of affordable homes. We are delighted to be working with Rollalong to expand our capacity by building affordable homes.”  The collaboration between the two south west–based organisations aims to tackle the current challenges of housing affordability and quality, by bringing together five decades of manufacturing knowhow and extensive knowledge of what people want from their homes.   Rollalong’s Managing Director Steve Chivers said: “The open day gave us a chance to showcase what we’re planning to deliver for Magna to the wider housing community.   “We are proud to have been awarded the contract to design and build these modular homes that will provide a range of high-quality, affordable housing for everyone. I’ve been overwhelmed by the positive comments about the build, particularly with regards to the finish we have achieved.  “This has also been a great opportunity to demystify modular housing for some and champion the benefits that this style of housing can provide in the face of a nationwide housing crisis.”  By manufacturing the homes within a factory setting, Rollalong can control or guarantee the following aspects:

Constructing a building in a factory setting is more sustainable than traditional building methods as it reduces material waste and requires minimal vehicles to transport the finished product to the site.  Paul added: “Whether you are a landlord like Magna or someone looking to buy a new home, there is always a doubt about how well your new home will be built.   “The demonstration by the Rollalong team shows that achieving high–quality homes again and again is in our grasp.   “The next step for Rollalong and Magna is further reducing carbon emissions from the way we build and live in homes.”  During the open day Magna Housing also launched its new website, which explains the shared ownership option in more detail and showcases the range of properties it will have available thanks to Rollalong.    We began manufacturing the first phase of 52 homes in August. Our in-house design team have developed four housing designs for the initial call-off order of 25 homes, which are expected to be completed by the end of September, ready for onsite installation.  Selina White, Chief Executive at Magna Housing, said: “Magna is committed to creating great homes together with our partners and this is exactly why we have chosen to work with Rollalong, the largest permanent offsite construction company in the south of England.   “Throughout our tender process they demonstrated a clear understanding of our vision and commitment to providing quality homes to be proud of, where people choose to live.”  To watch the video of the open day visit: https://youtu.be/kIWBA3yAv0s 

Rollalong Ltd are building a 3-bedroom offsite show home in our factory, which will eventually be furnished and displayed at our headquarters in Dorset.

The offsite built prototype house is ahead of our exciting residential project with Magna Housing to deliver 600 homes for their next generation of offsite homes, beginning with the first instalment of 25 homes in Spring-Summer of this year.

In what is described as ‘one of the greatest construction programmes in our history’, the Government state the plans of “delivering more homes that people can afford in places they want to live” in July’s Construction Sector Deal official Government public document. A strong indication towards offsite construction reducing the UK housing crisis. Without offsite methods of housing construction, the required short lead times for urgent housing would be unachievable.  The document is transparent with plans of £44 billion of financial support to provide 1.5 million more homes by 2022; which is where Rollalong Permanent Offsite Construction can provide a residential manufacturing support.

22 Week Housing Development

The document describes a vision for building homes in weeks – and even days – rather than months at a third of the cost to provide affordable and energy efficient homes. Rollalong commit to building and installing an 18 unit housing development in as little as 22 weeks, which is up to 40% faster than traditional builds of construction. National targets include a 33% reduction in the cost of construction, and a 50% reduction in the time taken from inception to completion of a new build. The ambitious figures will almost certainly require on offsite construction methods. These targets are supported by Rollalong’s internal practices and cost is kept to a minimum with a stable workforce, utilisation of materials and one of the most efficient factory manufacturing processes in the South West offsite market.

Offsite Construction

Wisely, the offsite and modular housing methods have been recognised as one of the only strategies to achieve Government goals: “Offsite manufacturing technologies will help minimise the wastage inefficiencies and delays that affect onsite construction, and enable production to happen in parallel with site preparation – speeding up the construction and reducing disruption.” Rollalong will provide 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes as a standard product to increase speed of delivery and reduce cost. Rollalong Permanent Offsite Construction exhibited our construction services at the Explore Offsite exhibition and conference last week at the Explore Offsite South West Conference in Exeter.

It was a successful day for the offsite industry as a whole, with the showcase of several success stories within this forever enhancing and growing construction method.

Visitors and delegates had the opportunity to discuss residential projects with our Rollalong team, Nigel Allen, Sales Manager and Bill Williams our Land and Homes Development Manager and the event was the debut for our residential brochure.
